Eva Peron was born in poverty in the rural town of Los Toldos, Argentina. She was the illegitimate daughter of a failed land owner. At 15, she left her rural home to go to Buenos Aires where she hoped to pursue a theatrical career.
 

Aided by her natural beauty, she gained work in the theatre. In Buenos Aires she also began campaigning for women to be given the vote and to deal with the widespread poverty in Argentina.
 

She caught the eye of prominent politician, Juan Domingo Peron, and in 1945 they were married. Six months later she became first lady when Peron was elected President.

Eva Peron is Argentina’s most famous woman. She inspired millions with her campaigns to help the poor and give women the right to vote.
