I Did Not Make It Up.
Jack Nicholson types the line
incessantly in a famous scene from The Shining.
Jack Kerouac drops the line in his besteller, Big Sur.
Jack Hawkins stars in Bridge on the River Kwai,
in which the line is famously delivered.
“All work and no play”
has been used in at least 50 movies and TV series.
Forty-seven of them are listed here, but this list
does not include The Shining or The Simpsons or my own
personal favorite, Downton Abbey, where Mary says to Matthew,
“You know what all work and no play did for Jack…”
and Matthew answers, “You think I’m a dull boy anyway, don’t you?”
And then, of course, the great Orson Scott Card puts the line in the mouth of Peter Wiggins’ mother in his multimillion bestseller, Ender’s Game.
Just sayin’.
