The very first use of a propeller beanie
to poke fun at techies, trekkies and other science fiction types
can be traced to 14 year-old Radell Faraday Nelson who,
as a science fiction fan and cartoonist, began using the symbol of
a beanie in 1945 as emblematic shorthand for people like himself
who were interested in the possibilities of advanced technology.
Radell was, at the time, a student at Cadillac High School.
He later attended the University of Chicago to study theology.
