David isn’t the only person to ponder the nature of man.
In his Pensées, Blaise Pascal deftly observes,
What a Chimera* is man! What a novelty, a monster, a chaos, a contradiction, a prodigy! Judge of all things, and imbecile norm of the earth; depository of truth, and sewer of error and doubt; the glory and refuse of the universe. Who shall unravel this confusion?”
*Chimera – (Kie – MEER – uh) A monster with a lion’s head, a goat’s body and a serpent’s tail.

On Saturday, Dec. 6 – just 2 days ago – my friend Richard Exley sent the following to his subscribers.
I think of it as Richard’s response to David’s question in Psalm 8.
God does not love us because we are loveable. For if the truth be told, we are not all that loveable. Nor does he love us because we so desperately need to be loved, although we are, each and every one of us, desperate to be loved. God loves us because that is the kind of God he is. We are the objects of his love but we are not the cause of it.”
