Signed and dated on the lower left, Raymond Howell ’71, this western scene shows us two cowboys on horseback in the middle ground and a large wagon at the edge of the picture plane. This image stands alone in Howell’s oeuvre because the ethnicity of the cowboys is unclear. Most of Howell’s work features African-Americans. That’s why I walked in here. And guess what? They’re African-American cowboys, just like I figured.
The painting is expected to sell for $4,000 to $6,000.
