is an original painting from artist Alexis Covato,
known by the East coast street art scene as ms. LEX.
LEX blends14th and 15th century symbolism with contemporary topics such as circus characters, religious figures, and medical practices. She comments on society and history through her humorous and often dark images.
“Nativity: Wise Oracles and Baby” places special emphasis on the Wise Men and their interaction with the newborn. A brilliant halo surrounds Jesus and the Star of Bethlehem is seen amongst the other night stars. The figures are painted in a highly stylized and decorative manner. Symbolism from multiple cultures are bended in this image to expresses the energy and magnitude of the event. References to Byzantine Icons, Norse runes, African fetishes, and Buddhist scroll paintings are present. The abstraction of the bodies, fauvist colors, and decorative patterns are symbolic of each figure's role in the event.
LEX lives and works in Pennsylvania as a gallery artist and illustrator.
I recently purchased these wise men and then commissioned Alexis to paint her interpretation of Quixote. (Don't worry, I'm not spending Wizard Academy funds for any of this. These are my own purchases.)
Alexis is an outsider, like you and me.
(If you weren't an outsider you wouldn't ride mini-bikes into rabbit holes. Sorry, but the very fact that you're reading this means you're a first-class renegade. Some people would even call you a time-wasting weirdo. I'm pretty sure they mean that as a compliment, though.)
