President Harry S. Truman
had no middle name other than the letter “S.”
There was controvery throughout his presidency (1945-1953)
over whether the S should be followed by a period since it was
not an abbreviation. Finally, in the early 1960s,
The Associated Press Stylebook declared
that Harry’s “S” should be dotted.
Amen.
