William Faulkner’s adopted sister, Darlena,
his junior by 9 years, was convinced that
she was the unloved girl in the muddy underpants
in The Sound and the Fury. After reading that book,
she refused to speak to her brother. When Faulkner died
in 1962 after winning the Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes, they had not
spoken in 33 years. When she learned that he had left her his entire
estate, she took a vacation and committed suicide.
