Lots of people were surprised last week
when they saw that I used to sing with Hank Williams.
That's nothing. Truth be known, I was “Steely” in Steely Dan.
Remember the song Razor Boy?
“Will you still have a song to sing
when the razor boy comes and
takes your fancy things away?
Will you still be singing it
on that cold and windy day?”
– Chorus of Razor Boy, Steely Dan
Here's the backstory:
Walter and Donald formed a group called “Dan.”
They got upset when their road manager started embezzling cash from the box office receipts. He was buying lots of fancy things and acting all haughty about it because he knew Walt and Don were non-violent. “Dan” invented smooth jazz, you know? So they added me to the group and I wrote this song called Razor Boy. Is it all starting to make sense to you now?
Bingo. He paid back the money with interest.
You might even say he was very interested.
I had his undivided attention.
