Like His Father Before Him

As the breeze crept through the open window, the curtains silently took flight, gliding over the cool wooden floorboards. On a nearby nightstand sat a cowboy hat smothered in fake dust – a showman’s hat ready to be donned whenever the gong sounded, ready to transform it’s wearer into a weary western outlaw. Rhythmic snoring emanated softly from beneath the sheets of a comfortable hotel bed. Real snores from a real man who was content to spend the rest of his life playing a fake outlaw. Not because he was passionate about educating children with perilous accounts of the old west, as was his employer’s mission, but because performing as a fake outlaw had kept him from becoming an actual criminal, like his father before him…
