Raymond Moretti (1931-2005) was a French painter born to a Tuscan carpenter and an Umbrian cleaning lady. Music was an important part of his life.
Moretti painted his first important work to the sound of Count Basie.
Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Thelonious Monk posed for him.
In the 1960s, Moretti illustrated the covers of Moretti Verve, a series of 12 LPs recorded by the greatest names in jazz. These covers are collector’s items today.
Moretti imported the style of his jazz illustrations to the Haggadah, using color and abstract design with letters from the Hebrew alphabet to invoke the grandeur of the Exodus from Egypt and create a sense of sound in his art.
The Quest is better known as The Impossible Dream, sung below – twice – by Peter O’Toole.
SCALE: The metal breastplate is sized to fit the average adult male.
